RISEUP VPN – Howto – GNU/Linux

Generate one key for VPN:

Menu | Password | Service Passwords | Random Password

Install App in Ubuntu and Debian 8 or 9 Stable:

$ sudo apt-get install network-manager network-manager-gnome network-manager-openvpn network-manager-openvpn-gnome

Ubuntu:

$ sudo service network-manager restart

Debian:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart

Open Network Connections in your distro.

Menu | System | Preferences | Network Connections | +Add | OpenVPN

Connection name: Riseup VPN

Gateway: vpn.riseup.net

[Authentication] Type: Password

User name: Your nickname in Riseup without @

Password: Enter the generated hash VPN Secret field of your account

CA Certificate: RiseupCA.pem

$ wget -c https://riseup.net/en/security/network-security/riseup-ca/RiseupCA.pem

Add new config in “Advanced” – “Security”

Cipher: AES-256-CBC

Authentication HMAC: SHA256

After you’ve done this, save, and the VPN is ready to use.
